If you're an accredited investor looking to learn how to invest in early-stage startups while supporting local entrepreneurs, these sessions are designed for you.

Offered by TiE Oregon, this 3-part series provides a structured approach to understanding startup investing—from the fundamentals of evaluating opportunities to managing risk and supporting portfolio companies. Participants will gain insights into how to build a well-balanced investment strategy, conduct due diligence, and navigate the startup ecosystem while contributing to the growth of innovative businesses in our community. *Session 1 is not mandatory to attend Session 2 or 3. Sessions 2 and 3 require membership, or those accredited and referred. Approval upon registration is required for Sessions 2 and 3. Register here.

March 20th - Session 2: Mastering Deal Picking

Building on the foundation laid in Session 1, Session 2 is dedicated to the art of deal selection. In this session, you will learn how to refine your investment approach by focusing on the following key areas:

  • Portfolio Construction: Learn how to balance diversification, manage risk exposure, and allocate your investments effectively between angel and VC opportunities.

  • Deal Sourcing: Discover various methods for identifying high-potential startups, including individual meetings, leveraging angel networks, syndication, and fund co-investment opportunities.

  • Startup Pitches & Due Diligence: Understand the evaluation process for startup pitches, and learn the critical steps involved in structured diligence to assess an investment’s potential.

  • Post-Investment Strategy: Gain insights into the roles of active versus passive investing, and how to provide non-economic support, manage your portfolio, and handle follow-on investments.

Session 2 is designed to equip you with the tools and strategies needed to identify, evaluate, and select the best deals, setting the stage for successful investments.

April 16th - Session 3: Deep Dive into Diligence

Sessions 1 and 2 prepare you for a thorough exploration of the diligence process in Session 3. This session provides a comprehensive look at:

  • Diligence Timeline: A comparative overview of the diligence processes for angel investors and venture capitalists.

  • Outcomes and Deliverables: Learn what to expect at the end of the diligence process, including a review of sample reports and memos that illustrate best practices.

  • Structured Process: Gain a detailed understanding of the key components involved in due diligence, ensuring that you are well-equipped to evaluate every aspect of an investment opportunity.
